Island Roots...
In Hawaii, we grew up feasting on delicious Butter Rolls and decadent pastries that could be found in just about any bakery. Our favorite bakery was Hau’ula Bakery which was just a couple miles down the road. Of all the sweet treats available in those pastry cases, Butter Rolls were my ultimate favorite. Traditionally baked in muffin tins, each tin was filled with a generous pat of butter topped with a ball of fluffy sweet dough, risen then baked to perfection. My siblings and I looked forward to Saturday mornings when our Papa would show up at our doorstep with two boxes; one with Butter Rolls and the other with delicious assorted pastries. It was devoured in no time!
A few years ago my baby sister shared a recipe for regular dinner rolls that had butter in them. They were good, but I wanted them to be better. So, I made several revisions until the taste and texture was to my liking. In January of 2017, I started baking and selling butter rolls from my small kitchen in my childhood home in La’ie, Hawaii. I would only sell for special occasions like Easter, Mothers/Fathers Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, and I would sell out every time. I would’ve baked regularly, but because Hawaii was so hot and humid I couldn’t bear the heat in the kitchen. If you know me, YOU KNOW.
